these are the old CMI boartds which have a bad history!! And this guy
keeps reposting this same ad every week or so.

I wouldn't buy one of these on a bet. If you want an accelerator
buy Dave Small's board or Jim Allen's board. Both are supported by
real fine people and you won't get burned. Buy one of these discontinued
unsupported board and you get what you pay for!!

Support the few remaining ST developers!!

You can do any screen dumps with the Correct printer driver,
but not with the built in driver, only supports 9 pin Epsom
Printers.

Note: here in New Zealand the 1124 came out as a best bye,
but that was too late, I had brought a NEC 2200, and wish I had not,
a piece of plastic junk.

Note: I brought a Atati because of its Gem capabilties, very easy to
use and learn, but you keep on about CLI, Why do you live in the
dark ages.
  If I wanted CLI, I would have brought a PC, I am one for things
that are easy to use, that is how you get more productivity.
If you what to stay with your Steam Engine, why not go play with it,
in the Museum.

What is wrong with Thomas Questers version of Lharc, it is fully
compatible with the PC version, and a lot better, plus it supports
all the othere LZH/LARC Formats and Unix ones as well, and Note.
packs far better than all the otheres, and is blindly fast.

Thomas Questers LZH201E, is now in English, and so are PFX and AFX,
AFX is for Data/Text and RSC files, will unpack them, when they
are loaded.
I have tested the Pack option for AFX and found on the 3 RSC files
that I tried, it was some 60% smaller.

PFX will pack programs, and will save a lot of disk space.

Why not get these programs and give them a try, you have nothing to lose,
but some thing to gain, you could even end up using them..:-).
Thas is you use a Atari..

I think this information is in the FAQ for this newsgroup, but since I
can't find the article (expired, I guess), here goes ...

You need:

gcclib - library files
gccinc - include files
gccbin - executables

It's also helpful to get the GNU utils (especially if the linker
gcc-ld.ttp is not in gccbin!)

Also, your environment should be set up some thing like the following:

setenv GNUINC c:\usr\include
setenv GXXINC c:\usr\include.g++
setenv GNULIB c:\usr\lib
setenv GCCEXEC c:\usr\lib\gcc-

The GXXINC environment variable specifies the include files directory
for GNU C++ (g++).  GNUINC is for the C include files and GNULIB is
for the library (.olb, crt0.o) files.  GCCEXEC is the path and prefix
of the compiler intermediate executables, such as gcc-cpp.ttp (C
pre-processor), gcc-cc1.ttp (C compiler proper), etc.

Subject: Mega/STE Screen Shifting

I have Mega/STe that with certain programs (such as 1stprint or Lucasfilm
games) will cause the screen to be shifted to the right with what should
be displayed on the right side of the screen being displayed on the left
(somtimes in a distorted mirror image). This only happens in Monochrome.

In color, certain programs (such as the mvngpxls demo) cause the screen
to flicker after execution.

I have seen these problems on two machines. Has anyone else seen these
promlems? Does anyone have a Mega/Ste that functions correctly? Is there
a fix for this problem? (The machine is still under warranty)

Subject: Pc-Ditto II connector...

A few months back, in Current Notes, there was mention of an improved
connector for Pc-Ditto II, that was supposed to keep a better grip (the board
that clips onto the 68000).  The thing was supposed to sell for $20 or so, and
the article gave an address and phone number for the company.  As the dang
thing seems to come loose every time I move my computer, but works when I
tighten the clips on the board, I'd like to order one of these replacements.
Does anyone remember seeing what I'm talking about, or know the address for the
company?  I know that it was mentioned in one of this years issues, but that
doesn't really narrow things down much, I'm afraid...

I have a slight problem whenever I try printing something when I use
1st Word.  It form feeds a page of paper before it starts printing, and
therefore wastes a lot of paper unnecessarily.
I am using a Epson LX-800 printer but am using a Epson LX-80 printer driver
for 1st Word.  I tried looking at the printer driver file but cannot seem to
find where it messes up.  If anyone else uses this setup or know how to
correct it, could you send me a message or post it?

That is the one thing we didn't do...  I wouldn't let him take out the
chips until we had the SIMMs working...

BUT, I don't think it makes a difference, really...  In bank 1, my Z*RAM
was used instead of the chips (which were only taken out about a week
before we tried to set up the SIMMs) for at least 6 months...  And the SIMMs
are working fine as his bank 1 with the original chips still installed...

Hmmm, maybe we should borrow some SIMMs and try that...

How do you do this (temporarily)? I have an old nearly-original 520 (with
modulator, without floppy) that has a half-populated Tech Specialties
piggyback board. I'd like to bring it up to 4MB, since chips are
practically free these days, but to do so I need to disable bank 0. I'd
like to do that without having to get a bunch of chips desoldered -- in
case it doesn't work and I have to restore the original setup.

Well, since demos are often hacked directly to the hardware, this isn't
exactly surprising. The STE does have more capable video hardware, which
incidentally happens to fall over some unfortunate code that depends on the
older hardware.

Some applications inevitably break with an upgrade to the OS. Either the
application will be fixed, or you could install an older OS version from
disk (or by using a ROMswitch) for braindead compatibility.

The rags you mentioned are the standard examples give by all
Atari Apologists (AA) (TM by Covert)!! And while they are all
good mags, they are NOT glossy nationally distributed mags which
show up in the big bookstores. they are rags which you have to
hunt to find. SO, novice Atarians wouldn't even know about them.

And someone who is just deciding which type of computer wouldn't even
know about them at all.

So, I don't count those as true mags. The are more hobbyist mags then
real commerical mags. As yourself this: Do any of them PAY for articles?
If the answer is NO (which I am certain is the case) they they are not
commerical magfazines but would be better classified as FANZINES!!.

Now, I just bought the Summer 1991 issue of ATARI EXPLORER which is
sold in at least my local WALDENBOOKS bookstore. But since it is
published by Atari Corporation don't look to see any controversial
articles in it. A captive magazine (like AE) is controlled, and in this
case the TRAMIEL TRIO would never allow anything negative to be published
in it. That would be like buying a magazine published by General Motors,
you have wonder how impartial it would be?


and speaking of CURRENT NOTES, what did you think of Bill Yerger's
Hiostory of the Atari ST? I thought that Bill really exposed Atari's
inner workings for all to see!! Bill probably made a few enemies with
his articles!! I don't supopse you would ever his articles in a fair
and impartial magazine like ATARI EXPLORER :-)

No, SOME of the USA ST magazines are ALIVE, ALIVE, ALIVE!!!  I hold in my hands
the Septemver 1991 issues of CURRENT NOTES and ATARI USER, and the August 1991
issue of ST INFORMER (along with a renewal request card).
